Janine C. Edwards, Ph.D. is a staff member of the Quality and Patient Safety Initiatives (QPSI) in the Rural and Community Health Institute. She is a professor in the Department of Humanities in Medicine at Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine and in the Department of Educational Psychology in the Texas A&M University College of Education and Human Development. As Co-Director of the Leadership in Medicine Program, she worked with Dr. Richard A. DeVaul to develop faculty members for the Program and to teach the medical students. Her current research interests focus on health services research and development of instructional materials for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and public health officials.
Dr. Edwards has been involved in medical education for more than 20 years as a faculty member, director of educational research, and associate dean. She was with the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1992-1996 where she was an associate professor in the department of family and community medicine and served as associate dean for student affairs.
Education
Originally from Del Rio, Texas, Dr. Edwards received her bachelor's degree from St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has a master's degree in educational administration and supervision from Tulane University, and a doctoral degree in instructional systems from Florida State University.
Research & Publications
Dr. Edwards is known for her research and publications in medical education in the areas of faculty development and the admissions process. She has published several books and a monograph about clinical teaching; her most recent book is titled Teaching Skills for Residents (Springer Series on Medical Education, 2002). She was a Vice President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for the Division of Education in the Professions (1997-1999) and she was also elected to serve on the Executive Committee of AERA. She has been active in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) for many years. Her professional memberships have included the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME), the Association for Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Society for Surgical Education
