Research Interests

The formation and maintenance of granulomas undoubtedly plays a central role in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. Although it is widely accepted that proper structural organization of the tuberculous granuloma to contain the bacilli is favorable to the host, it is now also thought to be detrimental to the host as it can result in collateral destruction of adjacent lung tissue in addition to providing a barrier to effective drug treatment.  Given the central role of granuloma formation in the pathogenesis of pulmonary tuberculosis, my research interests involve examining the essential contributions of TNFα to granuloma formation and maintenance in the guinea pig model of tuberculosis.
