Mission Statement
The Texas A&M Leadership in Medicine Program prepares students to assume the
leadership roles and professional values fundamental to an effective doctor/patient
relationship, and essential to addressing the broader issues of healthcare policy and
community health advocacy.
Goals
1) |
To provide a culture in the College of Medicine supportive to the
development of physician leaders. |
2) |
To teach medical students professional values and behaviors. The social
role expectations of the doctor/patient relationship and the social contract are
emphasized. |
3) |
To encourage leadership skills and behaviors, emphasizing the adaptive
leadership model. |
Directors Statement
Contemporary medical education trains physicians in the art and science of medicine in
a climate of increasing technical sophistication, and expanding knowledge base, and an
emphasis on specialty practice. An important adverse consequence has been the
diminished emphasis on the professional values and on the commitment to the social
contract that defines the medical profession.
The students study professional values, social role theory, and the social contract as a
part of formal training in leadership. Adaptive leadership, which defines leadership as an
activity to bring about constructive change, is emphasized and students learn to apply
appropriate leadership principles to the doctor/patient relationship as well as to broader
issues of healthcare.
