Dean's Message

Hello Everyone,

Please read AAMC President Darrell Kirch's annual address from last weekend's AAMC meeting. Darrell is one of the most thoughtful and innovative leaders in American medicine and we are certainly fortunate to have him as our AAMC President.

He speaks of a "New Excellence" in his address, by which he means that we need a new definition of excellence in academic medicine that goes beyond the arbitrary and meaningless U.S. News and World Report rankings. After listening to him, I am more convinced than ever of the importance and appropriateness of our strategic priorities in the College:

  1. Primary care and rural health: training the workforce our state needs
  2. Teaching and learning: the best medical school in Texas
  3. Interdisciplinary research: creating a whole greater than the sum of its parts
  4. Diversity: training a workforce that resembles the population it serves
  5. Financial strength: Diversifying revenue and managing expenses

Thanks for all you do to support the work of the College.
