June
Thanks to all who attended and participated in the Senior Banquet and Commencement. As always, these are wonderful events for our students, and it is important for us to show our support and appreciation for their hard work the past four years. I actually had comments ready to deliver at Commencement, but after the outstanding student response by Dr. Kelly Wright, I decided to let skip my comments. She delivered perhaps the best student response I have heard in all my years of attending Commencement. It was absolutely outstanding!
I have a few announcements or news items this month:
There are two promotions to announce:
-
Doug Venuti has been promoted to Executive Associate Dean for Finance & Administration.
-
Dr. Jay Puschett has been promoted to Senior Executive Associate Dean for Program Development.
I want to thank both of these men for their continued excellence in leadership at the college.
Congratulations to the following faculty members who were recently approved for tenure and/or promotion at the college:
-

The Year III clerkships will begin in College Station this month with students rotating in OB/GYN, Family & Community Medicine and Pediatrics. Many people have worked hard to get ready for this, and we are all excited to begin this program. Dr. Chuck Sanders has been the point person on this implementation, and I want to commend him for all of his outstanding work to get these rotations ready.
The Health Science Center recently introduced a new website look, and the College of Medicine was part of this transformation. We realize that there are problems with the transition of the college website, so we ask your patience until this process is completed. We have a new webmaster coming on board on June 11th, who will be working on the complete transformation of the website. In the meantime, please share any comments/concerns with either Dr. Annette Tommerdahl (artommerdahl@medicine.tamhsc.edu) or Summer Morgan (slmorgan@medicine.tamhsc.edu).
Another IT-related item involves the switch to Microsoft Outlook. The migration from GroupWise to Outlook has begun, so please be patient with the process. You will receive information regarding training opportunities.
I think that is it for this month. I hope your summer is off to a great start and you all take some well-deserved vacation time in the next few weeks.

FROM COLLEGE STATION:Upcoming Faculty Development Training
To help ensure effective distance teaching to the new M-1 students who will be matriculating on both the College Station and Temple campuses, faculty training workshops on “Distance Teaching via Video Conference” are being scheduled for June 21 and July 11. The initial targeted audience will be M-1 Faculty. As the year proceeds, this training will be extended to include M-2 faculty in anticipation of the next academic year having both M1 and M2 students at both locations.
In addition, beginning this upcoming 2007-2008 academic year, the College of Medicine Curriculum Committee has fully endorsed the use of Vista, a course management system, better known as WebCT, for the delivery of all M1 and M2 Course materials. Vista will be replacing EdNet. In preparation for the use of Vista, faculty training in the use of this new system was offered to faculty on both campuses. Training in Temple took place May 24 and was in College Station May 30.
M2 Dual Campus Pilot Study Update
A pilot study has been completed to test our readiness for going to a dual campus system for 2007-2008. A total of 16 students participated in two blocks of M2 instruction via distance learning while attending classes and residing in Temple. Both students and faculty involved were surveyed electronically, and the students from Temple were interviewed in person. Preliminary data indicate that the project was successful with only minor technical and instructional difficulties. A full report is pending.
NBME Customized Assessment Exams
For the past year, our medical school is one of 19 institutions that have been participating in a pilot project for the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) customized assessment program. This program will allow faculty at each school to build their own examinations by selecting the questions from NBME question banks. This type of exam is designed to provide a better assessment than the standard discipline-based subject exams of student knowledge in courses that are unique to each medical school such as those courses that are integrative in nature. Moreover, the customized exams are administered by computer rather than a paper and pencil format.
This past year, all of the M1 basic science courses created and administered these customized exams as their final course exam. This NBME project has now advanced to the point where it will be available for general use but initially to only 40 schools. Our institution has been selected among this group.
Report on Trends in Courses and Clerkships
For the first time in the 30-year history of the College of Medicine, the Office of Educational Development has compiled a longitudinal research report on trends in M1-M3 courses and clerkships. The individual reports, which cover the period 2000-2006, include text and tables summarizing quantitative variables such as scores on USMLE and NBME examinations and qualitative information such as Curriculum Study Group reports. These individual course and clerkship reports are available electronically from the OED and a PowerPoint summary has been presented to the Dean’s Staff and the Curriculum Committee. The PowerPoint presentation will also be presented at a future Dean’s Town Hall. Contact Mark Sadoski for more information at 979-862-1194.
