From the Dean
Colleagues, Faculty, Staff and Students,
A new year is upon us, and I urge you take a moment to reflect upon all that has been achieved and to consider the challenges ahead. We ended the year by recognizing the outstanding work of our faculty on December 15 and 16, at the Bryan and Temple campuses, and I want to once more highlight the good work done by the awardees.
The Excellence in Research Award winners were Helene L. Andrews-Polymenis, D.V.M., Ph.D. (Junior Investigator) and James E. Samuel, Ph.D. (Senior Investigator), both of the Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis.
Distinguished Teaching Awards in Basic Science were presented to Gerald D. Frye, Ph.D. of the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics and David N. McMurray, Ph.D. of the Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis. Distinguished Teaching Awards in Clinical Science were presented to Rachel Bramson, M.D. of the Departments of Humanities and Family & Community Medicine and William Koss, M.D. of the Department of Pathology.
Outstanding Staff Award winners were Jane S. Miller of the Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis and Mindy Holster of the Dean’s Office. Join me in once again congratulating the hard work and dedication these folks have demonstrated for the College of Medicine.
I would also like to add that Ms. Ellen Weichert’s title is now Assistant to the Dean and to the Vice President for Clinical Affairs, as she coordinates the multiple obligations attendant to these posts. Ellen will continue to serve the Dean’s Office from the Bryan campus.
We have much to do in the coming months in addition to the daily rigors of medical education. Legislative happenings and our preparations for LCME continue to occupy a great deal of time and effort, and we remain positive in light of our busy workload. As more information becomes available from the Legislature, we will continue to keep you updated.
We also have much to look forward to, including our annual Mini-Medical School, the opening of the Medical Education and Research Building on the Bryan campus, Match Day and Commencement for the Class of 2011.
The college’s 7th Annual Mini-Medical School kicked off January 20 and will run every Thursday evening for six weeks. This popular community outreach program showcases the research and knowledge of our faculty and allows Bryan-College Station residents to hear current health and wellness topics from local experts. For more information about the 2010 Mini-Medical School, along with a list of speakers and topics, visit the Mini-Medical School website. Also, mark your calendars for the Class of 2011 Match Day on Thursday, March 17 and Commencement on Saturday, May 21.
Looking forward to 2011,
T. Samuel Shomaker, M.D., J.D.
The Jean and Thomas McMullin Dean of Medicine and
Vice President for Clinical Affairs for the Texas A&M Health Science Center

Round Rock Staff Gives Helping Hand to Children

On December 13, 2010, staff, faculty and students of the Round Rock campus delivered toys and games to the children at Helping Hand Home for Children in Austin. Helping Hand Home helps children overcome the effects of severe abuse and neglect in a safe, therapeutic environment. Many thanks to all for helping the children!
In Print and On Air:
The New York Times and The Texas Tribune recently noted Bryan, specifically its Biotech Corridor, (and its partnerships with the Texas A&M System and the Research Valley Partnership) as an emerging place in pharmaceuticals. Corresponding publications appeared in the Bryan-College Station Eagle and on KBTX.
LRC Receives Instructional Tech Grant for Second Time
For the second year in a row, the College of Medicine Learning Resources team received a Classroom Instructional Technology Matching Grant from the Texas A&M University Vice President and Associate Provost for Information Technology on December 15, 2010. The team included: Dr. Gale Hannigan, Bobbie Ann White, Bradley Perrin, Pam Baker, Drew Davenport and Jan Hubbell.
From 13 proposals totaling $184,000, the Learning Resources proposal was one of a few selected. The grant was fully funded for $2,145 and will be used to purchase a media receiver and display.
A media receiver attached to a large public display monitor will allow students to quickly queue their audio or video selection and play it on demand. This instant queue media center is a valuable option for watching educational “on demand” content, accessing web content, providing small groups a remote classroom, and promoting additional educational tools and opportunities.

Reddy Published in Journal of Neuroscience
On January 12, 2011, Associate Professor D. Samba Reddy, Ph.D. published a paper titled “Development and Persistence of Limbic Epileptogenesis Are Impaired in Mice Lacking Progesterone Receptors” in the Journal of Neuroscience. The paper reports a novel role of progesterone receptors as crucial mediators in the development of epileptogenesis, whereby a normal brain becomes progressively epileptic because of precipitating factors.
“This is one small part of the pathophysiology of epilepsy,” said Dr. Reddy. “The next step is to use a lead target to disrupt the pathway to prevent or retard epilepsy, which affects an estimated 1 million women in the United States.”
The work was supported by a National Institutes of Health Grant.
“We find when we inhibit the expression of the protein PR in the hippocampus, we retard the epilepsy development and we also reduce its persistence weeks after induction of this chronic brain condition”. "It's very exciting. I truly see this as an advance in our research,” said Dr. Reddy, a chartered member of NIH study section and lead author of the study. This study was co-authored by graduate student Ashwin Mohan and assisted by a team of expert collaborators/colleagues.
Students
Pappalardo Receives First TBSI Graduate Fellowship
On December 14, 2010, College of Medicine graduate student Dana Pappalardo was awarded the first Texas Brain & Spine Institute Graduate Fellowship in Neuroscience. This fellowship is awarded to an advanced graduate student in the Neuroscience degree program and covers the student’s stipend and tuition.
For the inaugural fellowship, there were 11 eligible students from the Texas A&M Health Science Center and the Texas A&M University Institute for Neuroscience.
The TBSI Fellowship will accept applications in 2011. See more at news.tamhsc.edu.
Student Holiday Service Activities

In fine style, College of Medicine students collected gifts for clients at Bryan-College Station’s Twin City Mission, sang carols at St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital and rocked out with the residents at Crestview Retirement Community in Bryan—all on December 10, 2010. See more photos at the College of Medicine facebook page. Many thanks to Wal-Mart in Bryan, Kroger in Bryan and TAMSA who provided money, toys and refreshments for the events.
Baby Gear Donation Event a Success

College of Medicine students in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Interest Group organized a drive for baby items in December to benefit the Prenatal Clinic in Bryan and ABC Women and Children’s Clinic in College Station. The drive was held across the Health Science Center locations in College Station was a great success thanks to everyone’s participation. The group raised nearly a $1,000 in supplies and gift cards over a two-week period.

In order to generate an accurate count of scholarly products within the Department of Medicine, all scholarly products are counted only once and are not reported for every faculty member involved. For the purposes of this departmental report, a scholarly product will be counted under the first author’s division or program only. If the first author is not in the Department of Internal Medicine, credit will be assigned to the highest author in IM.
