From the Dean

Dr. Shomaker

Colleagues, Faculty, Staff and Students,

We have been quite busy this month with events, service activities and administrative undertakings, and I encourage you take a moment to read and share our good news.

On Saturday, May 21, the College of Medicine graduated 98 medical students at the Class of 2011 Commencement ceremony in Texas A&M’s Rudder Auditorium.  For me, it was my first College of Medicine commencement, and for some of our long-serving faculty, it was their thirty-first such ceremony.  By my count, that means that the College has turned more than 1,700 students into alumni in the past 34 years.  Congratulations to the Class of 2011 for joining that number.

Five of our graduates were commissioned as officers in the United States military, specifically the Air Force and Navy, at a special ceremony before Commencement at the Sanders Corps of Cadets Center. Family and one of our very own faculty members pinned officers bars on the graduates. Certainly military medicine affords our students a special opportunity, and we honor and thank them for their commitment to serve.

Also at commencement, we presented the 2011 Graduate Research Excellence Award to Dr. Chen Chen. This award is given each year to a graduating Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. student who has demonstrated independence, creativity and significant productivity in their graduate research with a high potential for success in a future research career.  Dr. Chen trained with Dr. Jim Samuel in the Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis. The 2011 Helen Salyer Anderson Award was presented to Dr. Ramesh Kumar.  Established by Frank G. Anderson, Jr., M.D., in  1980, the Anderson Award is given to an outstanding senior with the highest achievement in four years of medical school.  Please join in our congratulations to Dr. Chen and Dr. Kumar.

The American Academy of Family Medicine recently honored the College of Medicine with a Top Ten Award for our continued contributions toward addressing the nation’s family medicine physician shortage and our efforts to produce family medicine and primary care doctors. Ten schools were recognized nationally, and ours was the only medical school in Texas to receive the award.  I am exceedingly proud of the work of our faculty and staff to produce such a valuable human resource for the state and the nation.

Throughout April and May, students and staff gathered to thank, celebrate and honor the faculty who are the heart of the College of Medicine with annual Faculty Appreciation Dinners at each campus. Awards chosen entirely by the students were given for outstanding faculty and clerkships.  A complete list of award winners can be found in “Faculty News,” and you can see photos from the Bryan-College Station, Round Rock and Temple campuses’ celebrations at the College of Medicine facebook page.

The Medical Research and Education Building (MREB) on the Bryan campus is now officially occupied.  The Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis has moved in and is setting up their labs on the third floor.  We will continue to work with the Health Science Center and the contractors to manage the moving of people and resources into the MREB as efficiently as possible.

We will officially welcome 200 students in the Class of 2015, our largest class ever, at the White Coat Ceremony on Monday, July 25, and I encourage you to attend the ceremony as able.

We have much to do in the coming months, and I thank you for your continued hard work and diligence.

Sincerely,

T. Samuel Shomaker, M.D., J.D.
The Jean and Thomas McMullin Dean of Medicine and
Vice President for Clinical Affairs for the Texas A&M Health Science Center

Newell Rogers/S&W Receive $2M gift

Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, Texas has received an anonymous gift of $3.5 million. Two million dollars will go toward cancer cell research led by M. Karen Newell Rogers, Ph.D., director of the Center for Cell Death and Differentiation at Scott & White and the Texas A&M Health Science Center.

“This generous gift will further the advancement of critical cancer research, bridging the gap between research and the delivery of new therapies, said Dr. Newell Rogers. This gap often causes therapies to languish in laboratories for up to 14 years.” A gift like this reduces drug development time in half. More funds mean more resources for research. This gift will also fund construction of a tissue cell laboratory.

Update: MREB Building Open

Dr. Samuel and MREBThe Medical Research and Education Building (MREB) on the Bryan campus is now officially occupied.  The Department of Microbial and Molecular Pathogenesis has moved in and is now busily unpacking and setting up their new labs on the third floor.

The Department Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics will move in stages, likely beginning in late May and ending in late June.  The NEXT research labs will occupy the second and fourth floors, while the first floor contains administrative space for NEXT and the College of Medicine Office of Research and Graduate Studies, along with seminar rooms.

It has been a long and time consuming process from the design phase to the final occupancy of this new research facility, and I wanted to thank everyone who has been involved in this effort.  MREB is an outstanding facility and should provide tremendous opportunities for research and education for the College of Medicine and the Health Science Center for decades to come.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Executive Summary of Scholarly Activity

Scott & White/Texas A&M HSC COM
Department of Medicine
March 2011

In order to generate an accurate count of scholarly products within the Department of Internal Medicine, all scholarly products are counted only once and are not reported for every faculty member involved. For the purposes of this departmental report, a scholarly product will be counted under the first author’s division or program only. If the first author is not in the Department of Internal Medicine, credit will be assigned to the highest author in IM.

For March 2011, Department of Medicine divisions and programs reported the following scholarly activity:

3. Copeland LA. On March 29, 2011, Drs Chester Davis and Bernie Winkle in the Office of the Medical Inspector of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) called Dr Copeland to update her on the impact of her 2006 paper published in Medical Care (Copeland LA; Zeber JE; Rosenheck RA; Miller AL. Unforeseen inpatient mortality among veterans with schizophrenia. Med Care 2006;44(2):110-116. PMID 16434909).  Based on Dr Copeland’s finding that patients with schizophrenia are at increased risk of unforeseen inpatient death, and that this risk is multiplied when a patient has been out of contact with the healthcare system for a 12-month period, the VHA’s Office of the Medical Inspector initiated an outreach program for all such “lost” veterans across the country.  Mortality rates were confirmed to be lower for those brought back into care.  The outreach activity is being made into a Directive for use across VHA.
