Graduate Office Updates

Greetings and Happy New Year from the COM Office of Graduate Studies. The office had a very busy and productive 2011, and we would like to thank all of the graduate faculty for their efforts, especially the track leaders and the members of the Graduate Committee and the Admissions Committee. Their hard work and commitment to the graduate program is essential to keeping our program vibrant and responsive to the needs of both the faculty and students.

As part of our ongoing effort to enhance communication with the graduate faculty and students, we have implemented this newsletter that will be published initially on a semester basis. We hope to use this newsletter to convey program information, announce changes in policy and procedure, and to highlight accomplishments by our graduate students. If there are specific things you would like to see included in the newsletter or if you have any suggestions on how to improve it please let us know – it’s an evolving process, and we would be happy to receive feedback!

The COM portion of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program had 73 students as of fall 2011, split among four campuses (42 students in College Station, 23 in Temple, 4 in Houston, and 4 in Kingsville). Among these 73 students there were 10 first year graduate students and 4 MD/PhD students who began their PhD years during 2011. The overall student body is equally divided between females (37 students) and males (36 students), and 40% of the group are international students. During the 2010-2011 academic year we graduated 7 PhDs and 1 MS student, and in fall 2011 the following COM/SGS students received their degrees:

Blake Adam Bedenbaugh Master of Science
Dinorah Leyva-Illades Doctor of Philosophy
Venkata Kashyap Yellepeddi Doctor of Philosophy
