Admission Requirements
Admission to the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine M.D./Ph.D. program requires:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. and/or its territories;
- Outstanding academic record;
- Above average MCAT performance;
- Research experience; and
- Interviews with members of the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee and with the College of Medicine of Admissions Committee.
Applicants to the M.D./Ph.D. program must complete the AMCAS application as the primary application and pay the required application fee to AMCAS. Applicants must also complete the COM Secondary Application.
When submitting the secondary application applicants will be linked to additional questions that must be answered by M.D./Ph.D. applicants for the application to be considered complete. The secondary application fee is $60 (non-refundable). The secondary application can be submitted as early as May 1. THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF THE SECONDARY APPLICATION (INCLUDING THE ADDITIONAL MD/PhD QUESTIONS) AND RECEIPT OF THE SECONDARY APPLICATION FEE IS OCTOBER 1.
The MD/PhD Program requires three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should be from a research mentor. Applicants will not be considered for evaluation until the AMCAS and COM Secondary Applications have been properly completed. Applicants who also want to be considered for the M.D. only program must submit a TMDSAS application in addition to the AMCAS application, as applicants cannot apply to the M.D. only program through AMCAS.
Interviews for the M.D./Ph.D. program are conducted the day prior to interviews for admission to the medical school. Students accepted into the M.D./Ph.D. program will be notified by mail and are expected to either accept or decline the offer of admission to the M.D./Ph.D. within one month of receipt of the offer. Accepted students are normally invited back for a second visit to meet faculty with research programs in areas of interest to the student.
Students may also elect to transfer into the program during the first, second or third year of the medical curriculum at the College of Medicine. Transfer students should have established a strong record of academic performance, have appropriate research experience, and will be interviewed by members of the M.D./Ph.D. Steering Committee. Admission will require the concurrence of the Graduate Admissions Committee.
