Goals
— The faculty will strive to:

    1. Expose fourth year medical students to the broad variety of patients, multiple challenges and rewarding lifestyle offered to a Family Physician.
    2. Provide students with inpatient and outpatient experiences which will enhance their skills and prepare them for the duties of a First Year Resident.
    3. Provide students with increased responsibility for the care and management of patients with direct supervision from faculty and upper level residents.
    4. Provide ample opportunities for community activities to raise awareness of the social, political and economic barriers to health care .

Objectives — Upon completion of the rotation, the student is expected to be able to:

    1. Thoroughly workup and present ER admissions at Morning Report .
    2. Appropriately manage the care of patients during their hospital stay.
    3. Actively participate in discharge planninga nd outpatient follow up with others in the health care team.
    4. Demonstrate a good working relationship with other members of the team: faculty, residents, students, nurses and allied health personnel.
    5. Understand the complexity of psychosocial factors that directly impact our patients' ability to manage thier own care.

Learning activities:

  1. Be assigned three to four inpatients to his/her care with direct supervision by the upper level resident.
  2. Active participant at Morning Report.
  3. Attend all noon Didactic Conferences .
  4. Present one review article related to the disease process of one of his/her patients to the team during teaching rounds.
  5. One half day/per week in the outpatient clinic directly supervised by family practice faculty.
  6. Attend at least one clinic at the Gabbard Health Room which provides volunteer health services to the homeless in Corpus Christi.
  7. The student will take one night call per week, supervised by the Third year resident on the Night Float system. He/She will work up admissions in the Emergency Room and present these at Morning Report.

    2. Hospital Librarian to assist with MEDLINE searches
    3. Selected Review articles
    4. PDA with stored text. A loaner will be provided to the student for the duration of their elective. Alternatively, a student may elect to use his/her own PDA and download our programs to their unit if desired.

Evaluation:

    1. The student will be evaluated using the standard A&M Evaluation Forms.
    2. Students will be required to evaluate the rotation, faculty and residents.
