Goals
— The faculty will strive to:

    1. Provide fourth year medical students with the opportunity to function as an "acting intern" in Family Medicine.
    2. Expose students to a wide breadth of pathology in inpatient and/or outpatient Family Medicine Settings.
    3. To facilitate learning the skills students will need to meet the responsibilities necessary during internship.
    4. To provide an opportunity for medical students to get an excellent experience in Family Medicine.

Objectives — Upon completion of the rotation, the student is expected to be able to:

    1. Demonstrate the ability to present a directed history and physical exam of patients in a cleat, cogent, and germane manner as measured by the use of the clinical evaluation form.
    2. Distinguish the aspects of patients' presenting symptom complex that are relevant to their immediate and long-term management as measured by the clinical evaluation form.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to focus the differential diagnosis with appropriate laboratory and/or radiological data and correctly interpret that data. Thais will be measured using clinical evaluation form.
    4. Develop appropriate patient-centered treatment strategies. This will be measure using the clinical evaluation form.
    5. Function appropriately as an integral part of the medical team with the patient as the focus. This will be measured using the clinical evaluation form.

Learning activities:

  1. Actively participate in daily morning report.
  2. Presentation of cases.
  3. Participation in core curriculum conferences.
  4. Daily rounds on assigned patients; making daily notes.
  5. May be responsible for presenting topics of general interest to Family Medicine.

    1. John Peter Smith Medical Library
    2. PubMed/Medline databases and other electronic media. Additionally, TAMU students have access to TAMU COM via proxy server.
    3. Attending staff physicians and resident physicians.
    4. Selected review articles.
