College of Medicine
Founded in 1977, the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine is committed to educating physicians who are compassionate with their patients and dedicated to the communities they serve. With campuses in Bryan-College Station, Corpus Christi, Houston, Round Rock and Temple, the college consists of basic scientists and clinicians who instruct students during the course of their medical education. The College of Medicine is affiliated with the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System in Temple, CHRISTUS Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, College Station Medical Center in College Station, Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood in Killeen, Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Lone Star Circle of Care in Round Rock, Memorial Family Medicine Residency in Sugar Land, Seton Medical Center Williamson in Round Rock, Scott & White in Temple, Round Rock and College Station, St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center in Round Rock, St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, and the Physician’s Centre in Bryan.
This unique institution celebrates 30 years of teaching and research in human medicine highlighted by:
- Excellent educational programs made possible through combined institutional expertise and resources representing both the private and federal health care sectors.
- A class size of 150 entering students per year with students on multiple campuses, which allows for close interactions of students with faculty and permits more individual attention for each student in learning, counseling and career selection.
- A history of solid performance by our graduates on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and in residency training.
- Graduates representing a spectrum of career choices including practice in underserved areas, primary care and a broad range of specialties. .
- Growing community outreach program and a rural track family medicine clerkship in Beeville, which is designed to help our students better meet the health care needs of the people of Texas.
Texas A&M Health Science Center
The Texas A&M Health Science Center is the health sciences university of the Texas A&M University System, and officially began operation on January 1, 1999. It has seven components located in various communities across the state, as well as three health education and outreach centers.
Components of the Texas A&M HSC are the College of Medicine in multiple locations, Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in College Station, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology in Houston, the School of Rural Public Health in College Station, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy in Kingsville, and the College of Nursing in College Station. Outreach centers of the HSC are the Coastal Bend Health Education Center in Corpus Christi/Kingsville and the South Texas Center for Rural Public Health in McAllen/Rio Grande Valley and the Rural and Community Health Institute in College Station.
The Texas A&M University System
The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a statewide network of nine universities, seven state agencies and a comprehensive health science center.
The A&M System educates more than 105,000 students and reaches another 15 million people through service each year. With nearly 27,000 faculty and staff, the A&M System has a physical presence in 248 of the state’s 254 counties and a programmatic presence in every Texas County. Externally funded research brings almost $627 million every year to help drive the state’s economy.
Each of the 17 members of the A&M System has its own mission, history and goals. The oldest institution and founding member of the A&M System is Texas A&M University, established in 1876. Many of the member universities and agencies joined the A&M System decades after being established. Together, they strive to provide educational programs, outreach and community enhancement services as well as research that will improve the lives of people in Texas and beyond.
The A&M System encourages innovation and discovery. Faculty in the A&M System had more than $627 million in research expenditures in FY 2007, using funds received from the state and federal governments, industry, foundations and individual donors.
