Information For Students From Other Medical Schools For Scheduling Electives
- Students from other medical schools may choose from approved electives described herein or may participate in a Student Initiated Elective, which is an activity designed by the student. Student Initiated Electives for visiting students must be approved in advance by the Elective Administrator, appropriate Department Head, and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions. See directions for "Student Initiated Electives" (pages 22-23).
- Electives are designed as 2 or 4-week modules. No one-week electives will be scheduled. However, electives of varying lengths are allowed in accordance with the requirements of the student's own school, if this is approved by the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine (TAMUS HSC COM) Elective Administrator and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions.
- The TAMUS HSC COM fourth year Academic Calendar on page 9 indicates the standard dates for electives. Requests for other dates may be submitted to the office of the Student Affairs and Admissions for consideration.
- Elective oportunities are limited to students enrolled in LCME (Liais on Committee on Medical Education) or American Osteopathic Association accredited schools, except in unusual circumstances as approved by the Department head and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions.
- Certain elective opportunities are limited to TAMUS HSC COM students as indicated on the elective description.
- All scheduling of electives is managed by the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions and all communications should be through that Office.
- Students should review the information contained herein for the specific requirements of certain electives and should provide such information before arriving in Temple.
- Professional liability coverage of $25,000/75,000 must be in effect before a student can be scheduled for an elective.
- Each student is required to have a health insurance plan which will cover health related expenses which may occur while in Temple.

Limited affordable housing is available to extramural students. Please indicate on the Visiting Medical Student Application if such housing is needed. Further information and an application for housing will be sent to the student after elective approval. A $50 refundable deposit is required.
Elective scheduling procedure:
- Each student should complete Section I of the Application.
- The medical school should complete Section II and Section III of the Application Form. Immunizations listed on Section III are REQUIRED before a student is approved to take an elective. The section must be completed in its entirety and must be signed by a health provider or an appropriate school official. Please do not send medical history.

- Elective scheduling for students from TAMUS HSC COM is completed in the spring before proceeding with scheduling of electives for visiting students. Applications for visiting students will not be accepted before April 1st.
- Visiting students may schedule electives for a period of 8 weeks. Up to 20 weeks may be taken with the approval of the Temple Curriculum Subcommittee provided that monitoring of the first 8 weeks yields successful results. The Dean reserves the prerogative to further extend electives time beyond 20 weeks.
