The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine Houston campus is located in the world renowned Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world. The Texas Medical Center is home to 46 institutions, including 13 hospitals and two specialty institutions, three medical schools, four nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, pharmacy, and other health-related practices. It receives over five million annual patient visits, including over ten thousand international patients.
The clinical facilities are located in the Smith Tower of The Methodist Hospital. A wide variety of clinical elective rotations are also offered at our affiliated institutions: MD Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital, and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. Institutional, Inter-institutional, and city wide conferences are held on a regular basis for multiple specialties and provide a plethora of educational opportunities for students, physicians, scientists and other health care professionals.
In addition to numerous clinical and educational activities, research opportunities are diverse and plentiful. The Institute of Biosciences and Technology provides a bridge between the Texas A&M University System scientists and other institutions' researchers working in the Texas Medical Center and in the growing biotechnology research community in Houston. Research opportunities for students and residents are available throughout the Houston campus, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and The Methodist Hospital Research Institute.
The Texas A&M Health Science Center Facility
The Houston campus facility is located in the Texas Medical Center and is comprised of the College of Medicine as well as the Institute of Biosciences and Technology (IBT), the School of Rural Public Health, and Texas Institute for Genomic Medicine.
The graduate curriculum is interdisciplinary across the Texas Medical Center and promotes collaborative team science. The basic science and translational research facilities of the HSC are located in the Alkek Building. The facilities include 100,000 sq ft of bench space, 30,000 sq ft of conference rooms, computer labs, and IT supported facilities for video conferencing and education across the Texas A&M System and its affiliated institutions. Research centers on the Houston Campus include a NIAID/NIH Asthma and Allergic Diseases Cooperative Research Center, Center for Cancer and Stem Cell Biology, Center for Environmental and Genetic Medicine, Center for Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases, and Center for Molecular Development and Disease. Research programs emphasize the translation of basic science to biomedical relevance. Dual mentoring and collaborative research programs exist throughout the Texas Medical Center, thereby providing students with unique educational and training opportunities as part of the largest medical complex in the world.
The Methodist Hospital
The Methodist Hospital is located in the Texas Medical Center and has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as “One of America's Best Hospitals." The hospital consists of 918 operating beds, 73 operating rooms, 1591 affiliated physicians and 7,340 dedicated employees that serve approximately 37,000 inpatients, 275,000 outpatients, and more than 4,500 international patients every year. The Methodist Hospital has a long history of training physicians and is widely recognized for its expertise in multiple fields of medicine. It offers residency programs in orthopedic surgery, family medicine, internal medicine, neurological surgery, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics-sports medicine, pathology, plastic surgery, and general surgery. The Methodist Hospital Research Institute nurtures cutting edge clinical and translational research in various specialties within the hospital system and in collaboration with other TMC and affiliated institutions. In addition to The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, The Methodist Hospital has five other established Centers of Excellence in the fields of cancer, cardiovascular medicine, neurology, bone and joint disease, and transplant medicine.
The Texas A&M patient care and clinical research facilities are located in the Smith Tower of The Methodist Hospital. The 3000 sq ft space is designed for efficient patient access and is supported by a team of highly trained physician investigators, research nurses, clinical coordinators, and support staff. Texas A&M Physicians also provide consultative services for inpatients at The Methodist Hospital as well as for the adjacent St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and Texas Children’s Hospital.
Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital
Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital has been serving Southwest Houston since 1977 as Houston’s largest suburban hospital. It provides specialized services in interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and cardiovascular surgery through the Heart & Vascular Institute and also offers state of the art care in cancer, orthopedics, neurosciences, neonatology and outpatient imaging, radiation therapy, general surgery, and outpatient physical therapy. Women’s health services include facilities for antepartum testing, labor and delivery, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and a breast care center. The hospital provides 24-hour emergency services as a Level III Trauma Center and is linked through Life Flight air ambulance service to the Level I Trauma Center at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program trains its residents at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital and at their Ambulatory Care Center, Physicians at Sugar Creek. They offer several electives for fourth year medical students including Ambulatory Family Medicine, Inpatient Family Medicine, and Combined Ambulatory and Inpatient Family Medicine Rotations.
MD Anderson Cancer Center
The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is a comprehensive cancer center located in the Texas Medical Center and is ranked No. 1 in cancer care in the "America's Best Hospitals" survey published in U.S. News & World Report. M. D. Anderson is a leader in research on causes, treatments and prevention of cancer. Each year, more than 4,300 physicians, scientists, nurses and health professionals take part in MD Anderson’s educational programs. In addition, more than 1,000 clinical residents, 500 graduate students and 1,300 research fellows are being trained in M. D. Anderson's laboratories and clinics. The MD Anderson campus consists of an inpatient pavilion with 521 beds, five research buildings, three outpatient clinic buildings, a faculty office building, a proton radiation clinic building and a patient-family hotel.
TAM-HSC Library
The HAM-TMC Library serves as the Regional Medical Library (RML) for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine South Central Region, one of eight RMLs in the US. Currently, the Library contains 76,500 square feet of space, and holds over 357,000 book and journal volumes. Additionally, the Library has subscriptions to 172 electronic databases and over 9,000 electronic journals.
