Medical Student Opportunities
Training medical students is an important and integral part of our mission in family medicine education. We welcome medical students to join us for our very popular third and fourth year preceptorships. These electives are flexibly designed to meet your needs, interests, and elective time constraints. They can be tailored into two or four week blocks, and all meals and housing are provided. Please contact us as you begin planning your elective rotations, if you would like more information, or would like to schedule an elective or brief visit.

At the Family Medicine Center, the student will be responsible for the care of a select panel of patients and 'will be supervised by the clinic preceptor. The student will have the opportunity to function independently as an intern while remaining under the direct supervision of faculty member. Development of clinical acumen and confidence are stressed through hands-on, one on one, patient interactions. Our practice is diverse and includes newborn and pediatric care, obstetrical and gynecological services, general internal medicine, and geriatrics. Procedures performed at the clinic include removal of skin lesions, flexible sigmoidoscopy, OB ultrasound, exercise stress testing, circumcision, casting and splinting, colonoscopy, and advanced dermatologic surgery. Physicians with additional training in psychiatry, pediatrics, geriatrics and obstetrics are available to support the student.
Experiences on the inpatient service allow the student to primarily care for and manage a set of patients in the hospital under the supervision of faculty members and upper level residents. Continuity is a vital part of this experience which provides opportunities for the student to evaluate the undifferentiated patient, develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan, and care for the patient through discharge and follow-up. Daily participation in morning report, didactic sessions, reading assignments, and case presentations also enrich the experience. On-call responsibilities include the care or patients in labor and delivery, postpartum, and in the newborn nursery. The obstetrics service is very busy and includes the care of high-risk patients and those needing operative deliveries.
