COM Student Elected OSR National Delegate

College of Medicine student Jim Littlejohn was elected as one of five national delegates to the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) at the AAMC annual meeting in November. Littlejohn, a second-year student from California, feels honored to be part of the OSR’s Administrative Board.

Joining Forces for the Future

Prairie View A&M University welcomed representatives from the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center (HSC) and College of Medicine for the Undergraduate Medical Academy signing ceremony Monday, Nov. 29. The ceremony signified the official partnership of the three entities to prepare undergraduate students for careers in medicine.

COM, Prairie View A&M Create Undergraduate Medical Academy

The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, College of Medicine and Prairie View A&M University are coming together to recruit and train the next generation of medical professionals with the forming of the Undergraduate Medical Academy. Prairie View A&M University will be hosting the signing ceremony for the program Monday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. in the auditorium at the A.I. Thomas Administration Building.

Dr. Johnson Returns from Sweden, Nobel Symposium

Dr. Arthur E. Johnson, Wehner-Welch Chair and Distinguished Professor for the College of Medicine, recently returned from his trip to Sweden for the Nobel Symposium, Oct. 11-14. Johnson was one of 27 speakers invited to the symposium entitled “Molecular Mechanisms of Biological Processes”.

The College of Medicine’s Up-and-Comer

Dr. Siegfried Musser may be relatively new around the College of Medicine, but that doesn't mean he's content to let his more established colleagues do all the ground-breaking work. Together with colleague Weidong Yang and Brandeis University’s Jeff Gelles, Musser's work demonstrating direct monitoring of single-molecule translocation through nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences early this fall.

College of Medicine, Mays Business School to Offer Combined MBA/MD Program

In previous years, a student with multiple interests was forced to make a difficult choice when it came to selecting a post-baccalaureate degree -- would it be medical or business school? The College of Medicine at Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center and the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University have made that decision much easier. Starting in the fall of 2005, medical students have the opportunity to receive an MBA degree from the Mays Business School in conjunction with the College of Medicine’s M.D. degree.

Cooder Graw to Perform College of Medicine Charity Event

Loud Country recording artists Cooder Graw will be performing a concert to benefit the State Employee Charitable Fund Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. in the courtyard between the Reynolds Medical Building and the Medical Sciences Library on Texas A&M’s West Campus. Known statewide for songs like “Born on the Llano Estacado”, “Better Days”, “Willie’s Guitar” and “New Dress”, the group has volunteered their time and talent to help the College of Medicine (COM) raise funds for the Hospice Brazos Valley.

Finding a New Way to Fight the Flu

Dr. John Quarles and Nancy Arden from the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center have worked for the last year and a half with DelSite Biotechnologies, Inc. and colleagues in the College of Veterinary Medicine to develop a nasal powder influenza vaccine. DelSite, headquartered in Irving, recently announced the company has been awarded a $6 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to continue preclinical work on the project.

College of Medicine’s Student-Run Health Circus Receives Award

Students with the Health Circus organization from the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University’s Health Science Center recently received an award from the Texas Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. The student-led organization was selected as the winner of the 2004 Student Research Exhibit for the Texas Academy of Family Physician’s 55th Annual Session and Scientific Assembly. The monetary award and a plaque were presented by Dr. Robert Pope Wednesday, Sept. 22 to the College of Medicine’s dean, Dr. Christopher Colenda, and the Health Circus Board of Directors.

Dr. Johnson To Speak At Nobel Symposium

The College of Medicine’s own Dr. Arthur E. Johnson has been invited to speak at the Nobel Symposium in Sweden, Oct. 10-14. Johnson, a Wehner-Welch Chair and Distinguished Professor, is one of only 20-25 speakers to be honored with an invitation to the symposium. He is being recognized for his research with proteins and the development of a process to incorporate fluorescent dye into the proteins. This technique is now used by scientists in labs all over the world.
