10th Annual GSO Symposium Slated For April 14

Skip breadcrumb navigation COLLEGE STATION, Texas (April 6, 2005) - Every year, the students at the Texas A&M Health Science Center take their work to conferences around the country and the world. The posters and talks presented at these events represent some of the best work being done in the United States, though the advances made often go unseen by those we work with and around everyday. The organizers of this year’s Graduate Student Organization (GSO) Symposium are working to change this trend, by transforming the group’s yearly symposium from a small intra-College of Medicine event into an inclusive inter-component research social.

The 10th annual GSO Symposium will be held Thursday, April 14 at the Reynolds Medical Building in College Station. The GSO Symposium has four primary purposes: first, to develop a professionalism amongst students that only comes through the presentation of one’s work to an intellectually diverse audience; second, to provide a forum in which all can explore the intimate dualism of healthcare research and healthcare provision; third, to promote the actualization of unknown or underutilized interdisciplinary connections; and finally, to facilitate greater cohesion amongst the students and faculty of the departments and components of the Health Science Center.

Organizers have planned for a full day with posters, talks, vendors, a vast array of food and a keynote lecture by Dr. W. Ian Lipkin, Professor of Neurology and Anatomy & Neurobiology, director of the Center for Defense for the Northeast, and director of the Center for Immunopathogenesis and Infectious Diseases at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Lipkin is internationally recognized as an authority on the use of molecular methods for pathogen discovery and the role of immune and microbial factors in neurologic and neuropsychiatric diseases.

Significant changes have been made this year regarding the poster judging. A new category has been created for medical (MD), dental (DDS) and public health (MPH, MSPH) students, while graduate students of the GSBS, which includes all those pursing a masters or Ph.D. at the College of Medicine, Institute of Biosciences and Technology or Baylor College of Dentistry, will have junior and senior categories. In addition, there will be one oral presentation category that will include everyone choosing this mode of delivery. Winners in each of the four categories will vie for first ($300), second ($200) and third ($100) place awards.
