2005 Cadaver Ball Awards Recipients

Skip breadcrumb navigation COLLEGE STATION, Texas (April 8, 2005) - College of Medicine students had a chance to relax and spend time with their fellow students, faculty and staff the evening of Friday, April 1 at the annual spring formal, Cadaver Ball. One of the highlights of the evening was the announcement of the 2005 Cadaver Ball awards. Potential recipients are nominated and voted on by the students, and it is considered a great honor to be selected.

This year’s illustrious winners were presented with awards and an explanation for their selection. The recipients and the students’ reason for choosing them are as follows:

Best Department: Family/Community Medicine
As any medical student can tell you, it is easy to lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel while attempting to juggle five different classes at a time, amidst the many other commitments we have. However, this department helps us to remember why we are here. For one afternoon a week, we are privileged to be able to share in that doctor/patient relationship that makes this profession so priceless. And we have to mention, this department has the best candy in the medical school!

Best Block: Endocrinology/Reproduction

Although the block started out rough, we had some of the most captivating and entertaining professors of the year. Thank you to block leaders Dr. Chuck Sanders and Dr. Paul Brandt for making Endo/Repro the best block of the year.

Best Lecturer - Dr. Van Wilson
Microbiology, as most of us can attest, is not the easiest of subjects to conquer. However, Dr. Wilson, with his legendary notes and lecture style, makes it not such a daunting task. His dedication to his students and fondness of teaching is apparent by the time and thought he puts forward in preparing his lectures and notes.

Most Missed M1 Professor: Dr. Gary McCord
During the first week of the year, each of us lugged home a 3-inch packet of notes. We wondered if this was our packet for the entire semester. To our dismay, we realized this was all the notes for THREE WEEKS! Needless to say, the only thought going through most of our minds was how much we missed this professor’s lectures and concise notes. It is no surprise that when he offered an optional class this semester, the entire class signed up in a heartbeat. Dr. McCord, you are our most missed M1 professor.

Class Friend: Mr. John Nettum
This award goes to someone who has unselfishly given to many students throughout the year. It is rare to meet someone who finds time, regardless of his schedule, to explain the ins and outs of pathology. He always entertains us in lab with fun demos and classic colorful handouts. Mr. Nettum, thank you for all that you’ve done to make this year easier for us all.
