Four Students Awarded Scott & White Scholarships

Skip breadcrumb navigation TEMPLE, Texas (June 21, 2005)– Two third-year and two-fourth year students were awarded Scott & White Scholarships at a ceremony Tuesday, June 21 at noon. The scholarships were approved by the S&W Clinic Board on January 21, 1998 and are given annually to four deserving students. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee and each student receives $2,000 during both their third and fourth years of medical school. Selection criteria include high academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to community service and financial need.

This year’s recipients were M3 students Kara Cizdziel and Josh Kilpatrick, while Jed Grisel and Monty Shah received the awards from the M4 class.

Kara Cizdziel is currently number one in her class. She graduated from Arlington’s James Bowie High School in 1999 as the valedictorian of her class, and received a bachelor’s degree in zoology from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a 4.0. Kara is very involved in class activities, including serving as secretary in the college’s Student National Medical Association (SNMA) group and is also the Publicity Chair of the 2005 Region III Conference which will be held at Scott & White.

Josh Kilpatrick was salutatorian of his high school class in Bridgeport, Texas and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. He received his bachelor of science in biomedical science from Texas A&M University. Josh was also the director of the College of Medicine’s Family Medicine Interest Group on the College Station campus.

Jedidiah (Jed) J. Grisél, a fourth-year medical student, received his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University, and graduated with honors. He plans on pursuing a career in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery when he is finished with medical school. Research interests include studying the effects of alcohol on the developing brain and investigating the patient-physician relationship. During the 2003-04 academic year, Jed participated in a mentorship program at Texas A&M’s Lowry Mays College of Business where he studied quality improvement in health care. This summer, he will pursue this interest further through a fellowship at the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in Alexandria, Virginia.

Monty Shah received his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in biochemistry from the University of Texas in 2002. He was inducted last year into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), the prestigious medical honor society. His research, “Patterns of Usage of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine in General Surgical Patients”, was completed at Henry Ford Hospital and published in The Journal of American College of Surgeons and The Annals of Surgery this past year. Monty is dedicated to the continued improvement of the College of Medicine’s curriculum platform, and has served as the Class of 2006 Curriculum Committee representative and Student-Faculty Relations Committee representative for the last three years. Monty plans to become a diagnostic radiologist and would also like to be involved with academic medicine, as teaching has always been one of his greatest interests.
