COM Students Organize 10,000 Step Challenge Fundraiser

Skip breadcrumb navigation COLLEGE STATION, Texas (October 18, 2006) – Six Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine students have organized a 10,000 Step Challenge for the first time in the history of the school. More than 140 first and second-year medical students have pledged to walk at least 10,000 steps daily, which is the amount recommended by the Surgeon General to attain proper weight control.

They are asking faculty and staff to sponsor one or more students by donating $1 for every 10,000 steps a medical student walks during this three-week challenge. To fully sponsor one student involved in the challenge, it will cost only $21 ($1 per day for three weeks).

All funds will be raised in conjunction with the State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) and will be donated directly to Health For All, the downtown Bryan clinic that offers free healthcare to individuals without health insurance. Health For All is always looking for new and improved ways of serving the uninsured in the Brazos Valley, and our students feel it is important to support their mission.

The students participating in the 10,000 Step Challenge will be holding a kickoff rally Friday, October 20 at 2 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2 of the Reynolds Medical Building. Faculty and staff are invited to support the students, find out more about the challenge and sign up to sponsor one or more students. Refreshments will be served following the presentation and a sign-up table will be available.

If you want to support a student but cannot attend the 10,000 Step Challenge kickoff rally, you may drop off either cash or checks in the Dean's Office. Please make checks payable to "SECC" and write "Health For All" in the memo line.
