Four Students Awarded Scott & White Scholarships

Skip breadcrumb navigation TEMPLE, Texas (June 23, 2006) – Four medical students from the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine were awarded the 2006 Scott & White scholarships at a ceremony Tuesday, June 20.

The Scott & White scholarships are given annually to deserving students who are chosen by a selection committee. Each recipient receives $2,000 during both their third and fourth years of medical school.

Third-year students Matt Brown and Kris Crawford were the newly selected students to receive the scholarship, while Kara Cizdziel and Josh Kilpatrick received the scholarship for their second year.

Born in Long Beach, California, Brown now hails from Sugar Land, Texas. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in the top five percent of his class and from LeTourneau University in 2004 with a 4.0 grade point average. Brown has participated in medical mission work in Mexico and served as curriculum representative for his class. His future plans include foreign medical work and teaching.

Crawford spent most of his childhood in Pinellas Park, Florida before moving to McKinney, Texas in 1994. He graduated suma cum laude from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2004 with a 4.0 grade point average. While in college, Crawford worked with two family practice physicians and has participated in humanitarian efforts in Ethiopia and Mexico.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Cizdziel moved to Texas at age five. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1999 and from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in zoology. Her future plans include family practice medicine in Texas.

Born and raised in Bridgeport, Texas, Kilpatrick graduated as salutatorian from Bridgeport High School in 1999. He graduated suma cum laude from Texas A&M University in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in biomedical science. In addition, Josh was selected as a Gathright Scholar, given to students with the best academic records in each of Texas A&M's colleges, making this the most prestigious award granted for academic performance. Josh's future plans are to attend a family practice residency program to become a family medicine physician and provide quality health care for his fellow Texans.

The Scott & White scholarships were created by the Scott & White Clinic and Hospital Boards in January 1998. To be eligible for consideration, students must be a Texas resident and demonstrate high academic achievement, commitment to community service and financial need.
