M.D./M.B.A. Student Learns Life Lessons from Business Expert

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (November 27, 2006) – Delip Patel is taking the road not often traveled by his medical school colleagues, as he takes a year between his second and third years of medical school to work on an M.B.A. degree. Already five months into his coursework, Patel is grateful for what he has learned and the experiences he’s had.

“I have already learned so much,” Patel says of his studies at the Mays Business School. “I recently finished four courses and we’ve just started the next trimester, so life has been busy. I’m really enjoying this experience and have had some great professors.”

In addition to his traditional education, Patel had the opportunity in early October to travel with a group of 60 of his Mays classmates to Omaha, Nebraska, for an education with a more practical twist. The group, along with business students from Harvard Business School, spent a day with Warren Buffett, one of the most successful businessmen in history and the second richest man in the world.

“Warren Buffett is amazing – he’s like this mythical creature” Patel says. “He’s worth $44 billion, but that’s not what he’s about. Of course Mr. Buffett is an intelligent investor, but he lives wisely as well. The man lives in the same house he bought almost 50 years ago for $31,000. It’s really moving to see someone of this magnitude with strong ethics, still abiding by his integrity and values.”

The group of approximately 180 students met Buffett at the Berkshire Hathaway headquarters, where he answered questions and took pictures after speaking to the group. He then took them to lunch at Gorat’s Steakhouse, one of his favorite restaurants in Omaha…and picked up the check for the entire party.

The thing that struck Patel most about Buffett was his humility.

“Warren Buffett is so humble, and I think the idea of true humility is the most important the thing I took away from this experience,” Patel says. “This was such a great experience to get to meet such a tremendous leader. As I look forward to my career as a future doctor and businessman, humility and strong leadership will be significant.”

Once he finishes up this year of study at Mays, Patel will be headed for Temple to finish up his medical training.
