Dr. Childs is a 1989 graduate of the College of Medicine and serves on the faculty as an associate professor of surgery at Scott & White in Temple. He is also the director of the Division of Trauma and Critical Care at Scott & White.

“I would like to thank Dr. Colenda for the opportunity to serve as Assistant Dean of Faculty Development,” Dr. Childs said. “I am of the opinion that the strength of an academic institution lies in the development of a strong faculty and the ability to recruit the best students.”

In his role as Assistant Dean for Faculty Development, Dr. Childs will work in Academic Affairs, including the Office of Educational Development. He will have leadership responsibilities with programs that focus on accountability measures for faculty, curriculum development, and teaching portfolios for all faculty. He will also serve as a liaison to Scott & White, central administration of the HSC, and the college on matters that relate to HSC faculty development.

Dr. Childs will continue in his role as a vital member of the Prairie View Undergraduate Medical Academy Team and serve as the primary dean's office liaison for the SNMA and recruitment efforts for underrepresented minority students.

“Dr. Childs is an outstanding trauma surgeon, a valued friend and alumnus of the college,” Dr. Colenda said. “I am delighted that he has agreed to serve through building our faculty development initiatives. The modern medical school must ensure that faculty will build competencies in teaching skills and methods, evaluation and interpersonal development. Ed is ideally suited for this job and brings great enthusiasm to the position.”

Dr. Childs received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1985 and his M.D. degree from the Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1989. He completed a general surgery internship from 1989 to 1990 and his residency from 1990-1994, both at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Childs then completed a trauma/critical care surgery fellowship at the University of California-Davis from 1994 to 1995. He joined the faculty at Scott & White in 2001.
