COLLEGE STATION, Texas (November 18, 2008) - According to student organizers of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine's 2nd Annual Healthy Heart 5K Run, held November 15, the event was an overwhelming success. More than 180 people registered for the run, with 120 actually taking the starting line on Saturday.

"I think it went really well," said Ellen Ngo, vice-president of the college's Texas Medical Association chapter. "We had around 50 race-day registrations, so it was great to have so many more runners than we were originally counting on. Many of our classmates were there to support us, along with many people from the community who attended."

All proceeds from the race, totaling $2,400, will be split evenly and donated to Health For All clinic in Bryan and Martha's Clinic in Temple.

Prizes were given to the first, second and third-place finishers: Rooter Wareing, Ronny Eckels and COM second-year student Roy Lehman, respectively. Organizers say they also plan to give prizes to the top male and female finishers next year.

"Wow, the results were very well done - as a runner, I really appreciate that you took the time to make them official," said a race participant. "I hope you were able to make a good donation to the charities.  Thanks for your work putting on the race--we had a lot of fun."

Ngo says organizers learned a lot from putting on the event, which will only help make it better next year.

"We really had an excellent turnout and it was great to have so many people there to support our cause," Ngo said. "We received positive reactions from our classmates and community members."
