COLLEGE STATION, Texas (March 23, 2009) -- The John L. Montgomery, M.D. chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine has created a holistic physician wellness project for College of Medicine students called "Physician Heal Thyself" (PHT). This is the third year for the program, which is open to all medical students.

The PHT program will kick off Monday, March 30 at 9 a.m. in the lobby of the Reynolds Medical Building for a breakfast. Students will then travel to the Memorial Student Center on Texas A&M University's main campus for the remainder of the program.

Christian Cable, M.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Scott & White, will serve as the event's keynote speaker. A member of the College of Medicine Class of 1999, Dr. Cable is the Director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and the Assistant Director of the Medical Oncology Fellowship at Scott & White.

The GHHS is comprised of fourth-year medical students nominated by their peers and faculty for excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service. The PHT project is designed to improve medical student morale and coping skills by assisting the College of Medicine in developing physicians who are better able to recognize and address in themselves and their colleagues the stresses of medical training and future medical careers.

PHT is a mandatory part of the first- and second-year curriculum, with strong encouragement for voluntary attendance by third- and fourth-year medical students as their clinical schedules allow. The one-day conference consists of a keynote address and array of workshops related to health awareness, financial stability and coping with stress.

More information is available from the Department of Humanities in Medicine at (979) 845-0755.
