AMA President Rohack to present Grand Rounds on Monday

The Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine Department of Humanities in Medicine will host Dr. J. James Rohack, president of the American Medical Association (AMA), on Monday, March 29, 2010 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Medical Education Center Mayborn Auditorium at the Scott & White Hospital campus in Temple. Dr. Rohack’s presentation, entitled “Health Care Reform in the United States,” is part of Medical Ethics Grand Rounds.

Avery Associate Dean for Development

Edward J. Sherwood, M.D., Interim Dean of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, announces the appointment of A. Nelson Avery, M.D., as the College of Medicine Associate Dean for Development. Dr. Avery began his new role on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 and is based out of the Round Rock campus.

Cargile to Helm B-CS Campus

Edward J. Sherwood, M.D., Interim Dean of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, announces the appointment of Christopher S. Cargile, M.D., as the College of Medicine Associate Dean for the Bryan-College Station campus. Dr. Cargile began his new role on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Prior to assuming this role, Dr. Cargile served the HSC-College of Medicine Bryan-College Station campus as the Regional Department Chair of Psychiatry.

College of Medicine and Scott & White Recruit Top Cellular Researcher to Texas, Two Universities Join Forces

The Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine and the Scott & White Hospital Department of Surgery announce the recruitment of M. Karen Newell Rogers, Ph.D., to serve as the Director of the Programmed Cell Death Group where she will coordinate and facilitate the efforts of the group’s investigators. Dr. Newell will also serve as the Raleigh R. White Jr., Endowed Professor of Surgical Research in the Department of Surgery at Scott & White Hospital.

College of Medicine Unveils Dr. Sam H. Black Legacy Society in Honor of Charter Faculty Member

On April 8, 2010, the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine dedicated the Dr. Samuel H. Black Legacy Society in honor of charter faculty member, Samuel Harold Black, Ph.D. The first such society for the College of Medicine, the Dr. Samuel H. Black Legacy Society recognizes supporters of the College of Medicine that give at least $25,000 over five years or name the College of Medicine in their estate plan.

College of Medicine’s New Class Gathers in Round Rock for First Time for Welcome Weekend

More than 120 guests, including 84 incoming Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine students, gathered at the HSC campus in Round Rock on Saturday, April 17, 2010 to meet current medical students, meet Round Rock clinical faculty members and tour the campus as part of the M1 Welcome Weekend.

COM Commencement 2010

The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine held commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 22 at Rudder Auditorium on the main campus of Texas A&M University. The College of Medicine graduated 74 medical students, two M.D./Ph.D. students and five doctoral (Ph.D.) students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

COM Students Present Research at Inaugural Scholarly Day

For the first time, nine Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine students presented their scholarly research on Wednesday, March 24 as part of the Inaugural Scholarly Day at the HSC’s new Round Rock campus. By providing students an opportunity to showcase scholarly research across multiple disciplines, Scholarly Day emphasizes a well-rounded approach to the science behind medicine. The event was teleconferenced to the HSC-College of Medicine campuses in College Station, Houston and Temple.

Health Science Center Students Present Research at 15th Annual Graduate Research Symposium

More than fifty Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) students presented their scholarly research on Thursday, April 15 as part of the 15th Annual Graduate Student Organization (GSO) Student Research Symposium at the HSC-College of Medicine’s Joe H. Reynolds Medical Building. By providing students an opportunity to showcase scholarly research in a collaborative, peer-reviewed structure, the Graduate Research Symposium is the only event of its kind that emphasizes a professional approach to the science behind medicine across all HSC components.

Medical students participate in annual Match Day, a first in B-CS

Medical students in the Class of 2010 at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine learned where they will spend their residency training after graduation as part of the nationwide “Match Day” on Thursday, March 18. For the first time, two Match Day ceremonies were held, one in Temple at the Cultural Activities Center and one in Bryan at the Brazos Center.

Ogden Appointed as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs

Edward J. Sherwood, M.D., Interim Dean of the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, announces the appointment of Paul E. Ogden, M.D., as the College of Medicine Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Dr. Ogden began his new role on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. Prior to assuming this role, Dr. Ogden served the HSC-College of Medicine as Associate Dean for Educational Program Development and as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine.

Two Translational Researchers Honored at OTC Awards Luncheon Darwin J. Prockop, M.D., Ph.D., and Jeffrey D. Cirillo, Ph.D., were honored at the Texas A&M University System Office of Technology Commercialization Patent and Innovation 2010 Awards Luncheon on April 7, 2010. Dr. Prockop received two patent awards, one for Enhanced Growth of Adult Stem Cells with Dkk-1 issued in February 2009, and the other for Directed In Vitro Differentiation of Marrow Stromal Cells into Neural Cell Progenitors issued in June 2009. Dr. Cirillo received one of four Innovation Awards awarded throughout the entire Texas A&M System for “individuals whose research exemplifies the spirit of innovation” for his development of an infectious disease diagnostic platform which may bring a low-cost, highly accurate assay to the global tuberculosis diagnostic market.

Students Participate in First Student-Organized Neuro Clinical Round

More than forty Texas A&M Health Science Center (HSC) College of Medicine first- and second-year students participated in the first student-organized clinical round on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center in Bryan. The students were led by Kelly Lobb, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Carmen Ramirez, M.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, and Dr. John Gelderd, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics.

Texas A&M System receives more than $1.1 million from CPRIT for cancer research

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) today (Tuesday, March 23) presented a check totaling more than $1.1 million to The Texas A&M University System to provide support for cancer-related research by two professors.

Texas First Lady Emphasizes Healthy Lifestyles at Magnolia Tea

On Tuesday, March 9, Texas First Lady Mrs. Anita Perry was hosted by the College of Medicine and the Texas A&M System Chancellor’s wife, Mrs. Lou Ann McKinney, for the college’s sixth Magnolia Tea luncheon benefiting women’s health research at the college.
