Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research
The Fogarty-Ellison Research Fellowship is an NIH funded year of international clinical research in an underdeveloped country. This year-off opportunity is for medical students between their third and fourth years of medical school only. The research year can be spent doing any kind of clinical research, but projects tend to be focused on infectious diseases. The program accepts 25-30 fellows each year to be sent to one of several underdeveloped countries including sites on the African, South American and Asian continents. Applicants are required to identify a faculty mentor from their home institution, but do not need to identify a specific project ahead of time. Desired fellowship locations are requested on the application. All costs of finalist interviews at the NIH are covered. If accepted, fellows spend a brief training period at the NIH in Bethesda, MD, then 10 or more months of training at the selected international fellowship site. Stipends and other funding are dependent upon the fellowship site.
