NIH Research Scholars Program

Skip breadcrumb navigation

This program is a residential one-year research training program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD for medical and dental students. Fellows live on the NIH campus in an old nun's cloister purchased by the NIH which is right next to building 10, the main research hospital. All rooms are fully-furnished. The program is designed for students interested in translational or basic science research as opposed to clinical research. Again, types of research and projects are extremely flexible as almost anything is available at the NIH. You are not required to select a lab or a mentor before applying. You apply, interview, get accepted, and the first two weeks in Bethesda are spent meeting with potential mentors and labs. HHMI/NIH accepts 42 fellows per year. All interview costs are paid by the HHMI/NIH program. Almost all of the perks listed above for CRTP are also true for the HHMI program. The Texas A&M College of Medicine has sent at least one student to this program. Deadlines for applications can be found on the website.
