August 2019: Announcing Appointment of Interim Dean, College of Medicine

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Amy Waer, M.D., F.A.C.S , as interim Dean of the Texas A&M University College of Medicine. Dr. Waer will assume duties of this position on September 1st.  As interim dean, she will report to Provost & Executive Vice President for academic affairs and to the current interim Senior Vice President for Texas A&M University Health Science Center, Mr. Greg Hartman, for coordination of clinical, research administration and health collaborations.

Dr. Waer has served as executive dean for education and academic programs for the College of Medicine since 2018.  As executive dean for education and academic programs, Dr. Waer has led all medical education planning and delivery for the college across five educational sites across Texas. She worked to ensure the quality of instruction, student success and student clinical rotations.   She joined Texas A&M after several decades of surgical experience and medical education expertise with the University of Arizona Health Sciences College of Medicine.  She most recently served as associate dean of Curricular Affairs, prior to joining Texas A&M.

Waer received her undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Arizona. Her research and clinical interests have focused on surgery, surgical education and breast surgery. More specifically, her research has centered on breast cancer prevention and early detection.

Her administrative experience will assist the College of Medicine in supporting faculty and student success and completing the upcoming accreditation by LCME.

A noted scholar and educator, Dr. Waer holds numerous certifications including being a member of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  She is also recipient of numerous awards for her contributions to medical education and curriculum design including, Charles W. Putnam Teaching Award, as voted by her peers,  Award for Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching, and induction into Texas A&M College of Medicine’s Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators.

A national search for the permanent dean will begin in Spring 2020 upon the formation of the search advisory committee in accordance with Texas A&M University policy.
