Austin State Hospital

In 1856, the Texas Legislature established the Texas State Lunatic Asylum marking a major step in treatment of persons with mental illnesses by the state. Construction began in 1857 and by the 1950's, the facility housed almost 3,500 patients. As community treatment grew, the patient population decreased and the length of the day was shortened. Today, Austin State Hospital (ASH) serves and average of 292 patients on a daily basis, and averages over 4,000 admissions a year. The average length of stay at the hospital is about 18 days. The focus of treatment is generally stabilization of acute symptoms and return to the community for continued outpatient services. ASH serves a 38-county region of Texas, stretching from the Waco area to Galveston on the Gulf Coast. Child/adolescent services are provided to an additional 31 counties in Central and East Texas. Admission to the hospital requires that a person be a danger to themself or others in the community due to a primary mental illness. Patients are screened by their local mental health centers prior to being admitted to the hospital.
