The Scott & White/Texas A&M Health Science Center/College of Medicine Center for Cell Death and Differentiation (CCDD) is the result of a long-held dream of Dr. Roy W. Smythe, former chairman of the S&W Department of Surgery and a professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center. The focus on intersecting the clinic, research and education culminated with the department’s hiring of Dr. M. Karen Newell-Rogers as the Raleigh R. White, III Endowed Chair of Surgical Research in 2010. Today, the focus continues under her leadership and that of current Chair of Surgery, Dr. Harry Papaconstantinou.

With Newell-Rogers as the director, the CCDD has become a force for scientific collaboration, education and discovery. Under Newell-Rogers' broad wingspan of collaborations and charge-ahead enthusiasm, the CCDD sponsors an ongoing series of journal clubs, seminars, symposia and events that broaden scientific opportunities to physicians, scientists and staff and involve outreach to the community as well. The CCDD offers Journal Club throughout the year to students, physicians and researchers, with sessions broadcast to several campuses.

The symposium format has served the CCDD well. Major local, regional and national figures have shared their cutting-edge work with members, including presentations by Nobel Laureate Dr. Baruch Blumberg, discoverer of the Hepatitis B virus and Hep B vaccine; former U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop; world-renowned infectious disease expert of Contagion fame, Dr. Ian Lipkin; and Dr. Geoffrey Ling of DARPA and adviser for the Office of Science and Tech Policy, Executive Office of the President. In November 2014, the CCDD format was expanded geographically with the first offsite symposium — "At a Turning Point: Novel Therapeutic Developments in Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) Research"  which was held in Miami. Other leading scientists continue to share their work with the CCDD's constituency to foster education and collaboration with CCDD members.
