Borchardt serves as the associate chair of the Department of Humanities in Medicine and is the co-director of the Becoming A Physician II course. In addition to his administrative and teaching duties in the department, Borchardt is the president and chief executive officer of Hospice Brazos Valley, a non-profit based community hospice serving 17 counties. He also is the chairmen of the Texas Non Profit Hospice Alliance. He previously served for 20 years as the senior pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in College Station, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, New Orleans, and special assistant to the President of Lutheran Social Services of the South, a social service agency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Borchardt is an ordained pastor on the clergy roster of the ELCA. He is also a member and faculty adviser for the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Society.


Borchardt received his PhD from Texas A&M University in 1996. He holds additional graduate degrees from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, and Loyola University, New Orleans. He completed his undergraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin.

Borchardt is married to Chris. They have two children, Emilie and Josh.
