Education
Dr. Self is Professor of Humanities in Medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine. He received a B.S. in chemistry and a B.A. in philosophy in 1965 and 1967 from Furman University. After two years as an industrial chemist he pursued graduate studies in philosophy, receiving his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in 1969 and 1973 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then did cancer research in neuropathology at Duke University Medical Center for six years before embarking upon a teaching career in medical ethics.
Research Interests
His area of special interest is cognitive moral development theory and its application to the field of medicine. He has received post-doctoral fellowships from the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Society for Health and Human Values as well as Research Associateships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Council for Philosophical Studies.
Selected Publications
Dr. Self has authored over 100 publications and is the editor of three books: Philosophy and Public Policy, Social Issues in Health Care, and The Role of the Humanities in Medical Education. He is Associate Editor of the journal, Theoretical Medicine, and serves on the editorial board of several other journals.
